There’s an elephant in the room. The problem that President-elect Trump is trying to solve does not have a solution. Of course no politician would be willing to admit that, but the current issue facing the US labour market simply does not have a fix in the context of today’s economic landscape.
The issue is the wide mismatch between the high-skilled jobs required in today’s labour market and the skill set of the existing labour pool. The harsh reality is that for a non-trivial segment of the labour market, the future is not promising. Many Americans simply do not have the same role in today’s (and tomorrow’s) economy—they are not only unemployed but are also less employable.
